--------Baseball Great Charles Evard "Gabby" Street was born
in 1892 in Huntsville Alabama. He began his legendary 50 year
carreer in 1900 as a catcher for Southern Kentucky College. He
played for Several minor league teams including the Hopkinsville
Hoppers and the New York Highlanders before moving to the big
leagues, playing for the Washington Senators.
--------As a Senator in 1908 Gabby caught a ball from the top of
the Washington Monument whigh brought him immediate fame.
This ball is shown on the next page and is in the possession of the
Street family today.

--------Also while at Wasthington Gabby met up with Walter "Big Train" Johnson. The famous battery dominated baseball for several years. Johnson reportedly had the hardest fastball ever and Gabby was the only one who could handle it.

--------By 1930, Gabby was now managing the Gashouse Gang of the St. Louis Cardinals. Though they lost the World Series that year, they went on to win the 1931 World Series.

--------He then managed the St. Louis Browns until retiring to join Harry Carry in the broadcast booth, a new career which continued many more years.

--------Gabby also saw action in the military as a boy soldier in the Spanish-American War. Again, in WWII Gabby, served in France where he earned the nickname "The Old Sarge". While on the front lines, Gabby earned the Purple Heart for being shot in the leg by a sniper during an exhibition game.

--------He shares an odd history, as a baseball great who served in the 1st Gas and Flame Regiment.

--------Gabby married Lucinda Chandler in Joplin Mo. where Gabby made his home. He had two children that he raised in Joplin until his death in 1961.
